The University of Leeds

The history of the university goes back to the 19th century, when it was established as the Leeds School of Medicine. Later on, in 1887, it gained the university status as a part of the Victoria University. It’s been functioning as the University of Leeds since 1904. It is one of the famous “Redbrick” universities in the UK. The school employs 8,000 staff, and the total number of students exceeds 33,000; they study about 560 first-degree programmes and around 300 postgraduate degree programmes. The university offers courses in such rare specialist areas as Fire Science, Colour Chemistry, Nanotechnology and Aviation Technology with Pilot studies. The pride of the University of Leeds is its library, being one of the biggest research libraries in the UK, with 2.78 million books, 26,000 print and electronic journals, 6,000 electronic books and 850 databases.

Leeds School of Medicine is a part of the University of Leeds, founded in 1831. The clinical teaching takes place in two hospitals connected to the school: the Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital, as a result of cooperation with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. They are one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe. The school trains over 250 medical students in each of the clinical years, and employs over 1,000 staff, which makes it one of the biggest medical schools in Europe. The four institutes of the Leeds School of Medicine include: - Leeds Institute of Genetics and Health Therapeutics, - Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine, - Institute of Medical Education, - Leeds Institute of Health Sciences. The medical training lasts five years and is divided into the following phases: Preparing for Clinical Practice (year one to three), Clinical Practice in Context (year four), and Becoming a Doctor (year five).

Leeds Metropolitan University

First it was established as Leeds Mechanics Institute, in 1824. It was also known as Leeds Polytechnic. It became a university in 1992. In 2006 it was awarded for "outstanding contribution to the local community", it also came second as the University of the Year, for its "low-charging, high impact" policy. In 2007, the university was recognised as environmentally friendly and ranked number one in the UK, in a ranking of sustainability in the higher education called the Green League 2007. There is over 41 thousand students at the Leeds Metropolitan University, and 3610 employees. The campus locations occupied by the school are Civic Quarter (in the city centre), Headingley Campus (Beckett Park, Headingley), and Leeds Met India, which is a campus located in the city of Bhopal in India. Some of the cultural and sporting partnerships established by the Leeds Metropolitan University include Yorkshire County Cricket Club, or Leeds Metropolitan Carnegie F.C. It also supports financially the Rugby Football League.
